About Mami

Mami is a Tokyo-based independent researcher and writer exploring how institutions and technologies shape what becomes visible, credible, and actionable—and what is overlooked before a decision is ever made.

She is the creator of MAMI Theory, a developing research perspective for examining forms of information, experience, and human impact that conventional systems fail to recognize or preserve. Her work connects conceptual research, public explanation, and practical questions in AI-assisted decision-making, education, disability, healthcare, and public institutions.

Mami’s path into this work has not been conventional. Her own difficulty fitting comfortably within standardized educational and professional environments made her attentive to the distance between what a person experiences and what institutions are able—or willing—to recognize.

Motherhood gave these questions a new immediacy. Raising a child with periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) and mild cerebral palsy has meant navigating medical, rehabilitation, educational, and administrative systems from close range. Through these experiences, Mami became attentive to how a child’s abilities, needs, and everyday reality can be fragmented, simplified, or lost as information moves between families, professionals, and institutions.

These experiences shaped the questions at the center of her work: What disappears when complex human realities are translated into standardized categories? What evidence reaches the person responsible for a decision? What happens when a system encounters something it was not designed to recognize?

Today, Mami develops research papers, conceptual frameworks, operational tools, and applied methods around visibility, evidence, human review, escalation, and responsibility. She is currently extending this work into an independent advisory practice focused on AI-assisted workflows.

She conducts her work from a quiet home base in Tokyo while building a body of research intended to travel across disciplines, sectors, and national boundaries.

Related writing: Mami also writes PVL Bilingual Child, a long-term personal documentation project about raising a bilingual child with PVL and mild cerebral palsy. The project is separate from MAMI’s formal research, but records the lived experience and observations that inform the questions behind this work.
